We are the Calgary Chinese Alliance Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada, a multi-lingual (Cantonese, English and Mandarin) church with multiple services for people of all ages and from all walks of life. We are people redeemed by the grace of God through the sacrificial life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The complete realization of our redemption will come when Christ returns to gather His Church (the Body of Christ). We are members of the families of faith that make up of His Church (the universal church). Our local church is the visible, organized expression of the Body of Christ. Together we share our pilgrimage in discovering and realizing the fullness of life.
Our church exists to glorify God by proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ and building up a community of disciples (Matthew 28:19-20), through strategic evangelism, holistic care, biblical instructions and insightful worship at home and through missionary endeavors abroad.
We are called to follow Jesus in a life of service (Matthew 20:28). Our church will serve people of all ages and from all walks of life, especially all that come to us. However, we will concentrate efforts on Cantonese, English, and Mandarin speaking people of Chinese ethnicity in the city of Calgary with emphasis in the surrounding communities of the church.
Our progress will be measured and reflected by the following:

On behalf of the Board of Elders and the pastors, I would like to share some of our thoughts regarding the future direction of our church on this special occasion where we celebrate what God has done at CCAC for the past 35 years and look to the future for God’s guidance for CCAC. I will first of all highlight the past major events to see how God has led us thus far, then comment on where we are today, and finally look to the future.
CCAC was started 35 years ago in 1972 as largely a Cantonese speaking student church. Due to the need for a more permanent place of worship, in 1974 God led us to purchase a church in Bridgeland. In the same year, God also led Rev. G. Tsang to become the first Senior Pastor of CCAC. In addition to the students, there was also the explosive growth of the energy sector in the late seventies that contributed to a large influx of people moving into the city. In 1978, we had grown to have both Cantonese and English Sunday services. In response to the needs created by the above, a building project was initiated in the late 1970’s.
In the Fall of 1981, we moved into our current church building, which has become a home for us to worship our Creator-God, have fellowship with one another, proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, and build up people to be a community of disciples of Jesus Christ. The following events have also shaped CCAC during the 80’s: Chinese School started in 1980, a revival crusade in 1982, the late Rev. L. Shum came to CCAC as a missionary intern in 1982 and later was sent as a missionary to serve in Surinam, and Rev. A. Low joined CCAC in 1982 and served as English ministry pastor and acting Senior pastor while pastor Tsang was on Sabbatical leave to Hong Kong serving at CCCOWE from 1986 to 1988 and as the senior pastor from 1988 to 1989. In Canada, the early 1980’s was characterized by recession, high unemployment, high inflation, and extremely high interest rates. By God’s grace, we came out from the turbulent and difficult period of the eighties stronger, with greater ministries development and striving more vigorously in our evangelistic efforts. God carried us through various difficult situations. We were united in our giving for our church mortgage and in commencing our growth plan through new church planting; our first new church was planted in 1988, a second new church was also grown out from us in 1991, and the third one emerged in 1993. We are grateful to God that our building mortgage was finally paid out in 1995.
In December 1990, God led Rev. David Poon to become our 3rd Senior Pastor. Throughout the rest of the 1990’s and the early 2000’s, despite the various challenges we faced, our church continued to be active in reaching out to our community through various means and ministries. In 1997 our mandarin ministry conducted its first worship service. In 2001, we adopted our first mission statement to affirm CCAC as a multi-lingual (Cantonese, English and Mandarin) church with multiple services for people of all ages and from all walks of life. We also collaborated with other churches and organizations like CCM service centre, CUPS and more recently Inn from the Cold in serving the community. We committed to be more generous in our giving and more devoted in our prayers in regards to mission works. We have, by the grace of God, played a more active role in missions by sending both short-term and vocation missionaries from our church. We have also made efforts to support seminaries by providing seminarian internship opportunities for the training of God’s servants, and we have also used our resources to help the poor and needy at home and abroad.
With gratefulness to God, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rev. & Mrs. G. Tsang, Rev. & Mrs. Alan Low, and Rev. & Mrs. David Poon for having faithfully served CCAC as her Senior pastors for the first three decades of its existence. May God richly bless you and continue to make you blessings to others in furthering His Kingdom. I would also like to thank those pastors and their wives who had served CCAC in the past. I trust that God had used you and your wives during your ministering at CCAC and in shaping CCAC to become what we are today. I would like to acknowledge those who served CCAC as elders and deacons and their spouses in the past. May God establish the works of your hand for His Kingdom and Glory. May God also bless our office support staff for their hard works. Now, I would like to recognize our pastors and elders serving you today. Last but not least, I thank each of you, my dear brothers and sisters, for your commitment and love to God, your love for one another, and your ministry and service at CCAC, as we share our lives together in our journey of faith.
Today our church Sunday attendance is about 800 to 850. In a sense, God allows CCAC to minister to a community of approximately 1000 people. We are blessed with tremendous gifts and talents and abundant resources. Since we are given much, we are also responsible for much. Church leadership recognizes that our “time“ has changed; we have passed the era of Christendom and modernity. In the past 25 years, our world has been profoundly shaped by such factors: paradigm shift with respect to truth and knowledge, globalization of trade, the end of cold war, 911 event in 2001 and technological advances. The leadership also recognizes that there ought to be a paradigm shift as guided by the Spirit, such that we, as a church, will remain “relevant” and effective in fulfilling the mission God has given to His church.
As for the future, the leadership proposes that we re-affirm the following together, with respect to
1. Who we are and our vocation
“CCAC is a community of God’s people, called and sent to be witnesses by Jesus Christ, enabled and gifted by the Holy Spirit to shape ourselves in such a way that our lives and ministries are a faithful witness according to His mission.” Our mission is rooted in God’s Character and God’s purpose to restore and heal creation.” God’s master plan for His creation (Eph 1:10), is to unite and reconcile all things in Christ so that men and women can again serve their Maker.
2. What we will be like in 10 to 20 years
a. Growing and becoming more mature: unity in the faith and knowledge of God, obedience to the great commandment, and fulfillment of the great commission.
b. Relationship with our community: CCAC shall make a significant impact through our service as a church in our active involvement in the community.
c. Size: a target of 1,500 Sunday service attendees across three congregations over next 10 to 20 years.
d. Building: we may move into a new building in the next 5 -10 years, that will facilitate our ministries and growth.
May God continue to lead us and use us as His agent to represent the reign of His kingdom in transforming our world!
